Recently, by a decision of the Berezivka Village Council session, the Local Waste Management Plan of the Berezivka Rural Territorial Community of the Shostka District of the Sumy Region until 2034 was approved. It is worth noting that this is the first local waste management plan approved in the Sumy Region.
The creation of this important document for community development was supported by the UCORD project. This support included consulting the community on the creation of a working group to develop the document, providing expert methodological assistance in the preparation of the strategic environmental assessment of the LWMP and the local waste management plan (LWMP).
«This initiative, supported by UCORD, serves as an example to demonstrate a practical approach that will help guide other communities in developing local waste management plans that are aligned with regional and national frameworks, while actively promoting inter-municipal and regional cooperation. For example, one community aligns its local plan with a broader waste management cluster that includes other territorial communities. This alignment demonstrates how a local waste management plan can act as a catalyst for inter-municipal and regional cooperation,” says Maryna Bryl, UCORD Project Leader.
We remind you that in order to receive support from UCORD in developing the lWMP, the Berezivska community of Sumy region took part in the competitive selection announced in May 2024 and became its winner. In total, 6 communities of Sumy region participated in the competition.
We congratulate the Bereziv community on the approval of this important document and wish it effective implementation!
For reference: Local waste management plans are important strategic documents of territorial communities in achieving waste management targets set by the Law “On Waste Management” and relevant regional plans. But first and foremost, they are practical tools for proper care of the well-being of Ukrainians and our environment.
